Welcome to The Village at Safe Harbor.

This community was built in the early 1930’s as the operator’s village for the Safe Harbor Hydroelectric Power Plant, and is currently offered as a private rental community with single homes, apartments and garages available for your living and recreational enjoyment.

During WWII, the Village also temporarily housed U.S. Military troops to protect the hydroelectric plant immediately following the attack on Pearl Harbor and it has even been noted that Adolf Hitler had Safe Harbor Hydro Dam targeted as a strategic point, for at the time it primarily powered the railroads and the city of Baltimore with its ports and industry.

Safe Harbor Dam is still one of three operating hydroelectric dams on the Susquehanna River.  With transportation and technology advances the Village is no longer relied upon for employee housing.

Safe Harbor Water Power Corporation retained ownership of Safe Harbor Village for over 80 years, until May 2014, at which time it was sold to a local group of real estate investors, whom share a vision to preserve the character and beauty of this rare piece of history.

More than just a housing complex.

Today the Village consists of 26 structures including 21 single family homes - all with a fireplace and garage, and surrounded by extrusive woodlands - an 8 unit apartment building which once included a doctor’s office, an office building with 2nd floor apartments, a splendid dining hall with post office, a bachelor’s quarters (3br apartments) , and 17 garages.

At its inception, employees of Safe Harbor Water Power Corporation would enjoy the benefits of this incredible community and simply walk down the concrete steps, on the western side, to the Power Plant for their work day.

The exterior of the buildings situated in Safe Harbor Village all showcase a variety of prominent features - brick walls, decorative half-timbering, steeply pitched slate roofs, prominent cross gables, tall narrow doors and windows, and large chimneys - reflective of the Tudor Revival time period, popular at the time of construction.

An exclusive neighborhood that has endured for generations.

The Village at Safe Harbor is situated in Conestoga Township, just north of the Safe Harbor Dam and just east of the Safe Harbor Recreation Area.

Conveniently located 10 minutes south of Millersville and 15 minutes west of Willow Street for your shopping needs, the Village is bordered by 200 acres of pristine woodlands complete with streams and hiking trails to soothe your soul when the demands of modern toil have taken a toll.

Immediately adjacent to the Village and its lands, is Safe Harbor Park, with approximately 50 acres of  public recreation bordering the Conestoga River. The park provides pavilions and picnic facilities along with baseball diamonds, tennis courts, playgrounds, walking trails and fishing for your physical and mental enjoyment.

A village, surrounded by a park, minutes from the city....priceless!
